Getting started

Updated

DataWasi is where you keep the information your work runs on — customers, products, expenses, anything you track — in tables you design yourself.

What is a table?

A table is like a smart spreadsheet: you choose its columns (called fields) and then add rows (called records). Unlike a spreadsheet, each field has a type — a date is a real date, an amount is real money — so DataWasi can total, filter, and check your data for you.

The three building blocks

  • Tables — one per kind of thing you track.
  • Fields — the columns that say what each record holds.
  • Records — the individual entries you add to a table.

Getting an account

Request access on datawasi.com opens the sign-up form. Pick a username — how you sign in and how others @mention you — a password, and give your email. We approve new accounts by hand: once yours is, we email you a link that confirms your email and opens the sign-in page. From then on you can sign in with your username or that email. Requesting an account means accepting the Terms of service and the Privacy policy, linked right above the button.

Invited to someone's tables? Use the link in the invitation instead: it signs you up straight away, with no approval to wait for.

Getting around

  • The bar at the top starts with ☰, then the name of the account you're in. Click the name for its page, a tile for each of its tables with how many records it holds — and, if you run the account, Add table beside its title. Click ☰ for the last accounts you were in, starting with this one, to move to another. An account you run ends in a ⚙ that opens its Settings page, a tile each for Account, Groups and permissions, and Billing. Below them come All accounts and Add account.
  • On a table's pages, the table's name is the page's title. Click it for a menu with every table in the account and, under the current one, All records and the table's views. Type to filter, then pick. Beside the title, New adds a record to the table, and Settings opens its settings, when you manage it — as does the ⚙ at the end of its tile on the account's page. A record's title starts with its table's name, which leads back to its records.
  • On the right of the bar, the ? icon (Help) opens this panel; the bell next to it opens your notifications, with a dot while something is unread; and last comes your picture, which opens your User settings: a tile for each part of them — and, for system users, one for the system panel — with Sign out beside the title.
  • Accounts lists every account you can enter — shared with you, or managed by you; on one you run, the ⚙ at the end of its tile opens its Settings page. If you're in just one, opening the app takes you straight into it; otherwise it opens this list. Tables always live in an account; your username is just you.
  • Outside every account — Accounts, your User settings, your notifications — your username takes the account's place beside ☰. Click it to go home: straight into your account, or to Accounts when you're in more than one.
  • On a phone the bar is the same, and its menus open across the full width, just under it.

Finding help

Wherever you are, the ? icon in the bar opens this panel with help for the screen you're on. Use the “View full documentation” link to read more on the web: it opens in a new tab, with “Go to DataWasi” at the top to come back.
